ISLAMABAD: Power outages for prolonged hours in urban and rural areas have belied Pakistan Electric Power Company’s claim that load shedding is observed for only 5-8 hours.

The actual duration of power outages in urban areas is 8-10 hours while it is 14-16 hours in rural areas, respectively.

The electricity consumers will have to suffer even more as the power shortfall reached 4,500 megawatts on Friday, which would result in maximum level of load shedding in urban and rural areas across the country.

Pakistan Electric Power Company (PEPCO) sources said that total demand of power was 13,026MW, while power supply stood at 9,426MW across the country. He said the gap between demand and supply could rise due to water shortage in reservoirs and it would affect power consumers more severely in June.

The Pepco sources said there is no getting away from unannounced load shedding under these circumstances.

The industrial sector is near its closure owing to acute power shortage. Several factories have closed their one shift, which will scale up the unemployment in the country.

The trade organizations asked the government who is responsible for the power crisis after two years of government amid their tall claims, as people are still devoid of electricity despite paying the inflated power bills.

Consumers said authorities had collected billions of rupees from consumers across the country in the name of Neelam-Jehlum (NJ) surcharge for NJ power project that has not even started yet and the general consumers are suffering from load shedding across the country. “Where has all the money gone,” people raised the question and demanded transparency and detailed reports on throwing public money down the river.

The Power and Water Ministry officials said hydal production went down by 5000MW with increased demand as the mercury is still rising to higher level.

The officials further said the water inflow at dams is expected to increase next month which would help decrease the load shedding durations.

ATHENS: A bomb exploded early Saturday outside the home of a Pakistani community leader in Athens without injuring anyone, Greek police said.

Anonymous warnings made by telephone to a Greek television station and a newspaper 15 minutes before the explosion enabled police to seal off the area.

Media reports said the bomb had targetted the home of the chairman of the Greek-Pakistan friendship association. A bomb squad was examining the remains of the device for clues.

The Pakistani community in Greece numbers several thousand members, most of whom live in the greater Athens area.

Muslim migrants in Greece have faced increasing hostility from far-right militants in recent years, and the Pakistani community has frequently denounced attacks on its members by Greek youths.

Saturday''s bombing occurred in the central Athens district of Agios Panteleimonas which has a strong immigrant presence and where protests both in favour and against foreigners have been held in recent months.

Last month a gang of mostly teenagers set fire to a house in Sparta, southern Greece as a group of Bangladeshi migrants slept inside.

In May, five Bangladeshi migrants were injured after unknown assailants tried to burn down a makeshift mosque in Athens.

Greece has no licensed mosques except in a region near the border with Turkey where a Greek Muslim minority of Turkish origin lives.

Thousands of Muslims immigrants elsewhere in the country are forced to use rented flats and warehouses for their prayers.

WASHINGTON: US Special Representative for Pakistan and Afghanistan Richard Holbrooke has said the strategic dialogue between Pakistan and the United States of America had a broad and complex agenda.

However, the focus will be to strengthen democratic institutions in Pakistan, eliminating terrorism, ending poverty and finding solutions for the power crisis, he told reporters at a briefing at the State Department here on Friday.

Ambassador Holbrooke said inclusion of Army chief Gen Ashfaq Parvez Kayani in the Pakistani delegation was the decision of the Pakistan government and “we welcome that decision”. About reports suggesting that the US was more comfortable with talking to the military rather than talking to the Zardari government, he said laughingly that “we consider them one government and one team”.

“How can you have strategic dialogue without the Army chief,” he questioned. “If we have strategic dialogue in our country, we will have the Chairman Joint Chief of Staff Admiral Mullen or any of his representatives,” he said. But the decision to include Gen Kayani in the delegation was the decision of the Pakistani government, he added

He said the Obama administration wanted to help Pakistan immediately but the process was little lengthy because the Congress, which has its own rules and procedures, writes the checks.

Ambassador Richard Holbrooke said the strategic dialogue with Pakistan would not be at the expense of any other country. He said the next round of strategic dialogue between the two countries would take place in Islamabad in next six months. Holbrooke also said he and Admiral Mullen had postponed the next week’s trip to Pakistan.
