LAHORE: President Asif Ali Zardari has said that the government believed in freedom of media and was committed to strengthen democracy in the country.
He was talking to newly elected office-bearers of Lahore Press Club, who called on him here at Governor?s House on Monday. The President assured the office-bearers of obstructing all moves, which infringe upon the press freedom.
He also stressed upon the media to play its effective role in foiling any conspiracies against the government and democracy.
While discussing the matter of high price of plots and the construction of houses in Journalist Colony Lahore, President Zardari instructed the Minister for Information and the Minister for Finance to deliberate on the subject and work out a plan for the provision of soft loan by the federal government in this respect.
The President also asked the Federal Information Minister to continue to have enhanced interaction with the media persons, besides ensuring compliance of their demands.
On this occasion, the LPC office-bearers also adopted the following resolution,
?With divergence prevalent in political thinking all around, the Lahore Press Club is committed to democracy and will lend its support to the political parties subscribing to this ideology.
The newly elected members of the Club?s governing body in their emergency meeting on Monday expressed deep concern over the foul conspiracies presently being hatched to derail the democratic process and called upon the leadership of the mainstream political parties not just to frustrate the designs of the elements bent upon pushing the state institutions towards confrontation but to join hands with one another and save the country from blindly plunging once again into a repressive dictatorship from which it had emerged after great suffering.?
